Alex Ferguson will be 69 this New Year’s Eve and has no firm retirement date set. As such, you can expect an avalanche of stories all season about this being his last year and who is set to replace him. Things have kicked off already with Wesley Schneider claiming Mourinho wants the job when the great man finally hangs up his hairdryer.

I wouldn’t be opposed to Jose but he has the massive problem that his teams play boring football. My bet for a dark horse would be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is already doing an apprenticeship with the reserves and has an excellent football brain. He is also a deity.
What are your thoughts on the story?
murinho as an immediate replacement when fergie retires and ole as his right hand man. murinho will never be a long term coach and hence ole to take over after a few seasons.
boring or whatever… one thing’s for sure; if there is a man capable of being at the helm of affairs at old trafford (once the great knight retires), its jose. he’s gonna be a star. and in all honesty, im really looking forward to it!
Like you Mark, I have no problems with Murinho taking over the reins even though his style is certainly different from Fergies and ManU,I had commented to a friend of mine when Ole retired from playing “Don’t be surprised if Ole becomes the next Manager”. What troubles me is what history teaches us when great managers retire, 20 odd years before we won anything when Sir Matt retired and we only have to look at our great rivals “The L Team” to see history repeating it’s self. Maybe Murinho followed by Ole is the way we should go but I can’t help but feel who ever takes over for the long term will need to be their “Own Man” and it worries me that Ole may be too much a Man U person to be that, however I certainly would still be happy if Ole was given the top job from the time Fergie retires.
It has to be Jose, it has to be. His boring reputation is overrated, the first season he won the title in England 3 of his midfield 4 were Robben, Lampard and Duff. He is without doubt the man for the job and he is the only character in World football with the personality to do it!
