Open Thread: Martin O’Neill

By all accounts both Villa and O’Neill will come off badly after his shock departure this morning. Where has the Ulsterman ever done a bad job of being manager? Nowhere, he is someone who manages to combine a flair for the job along with being a nice guy. The shame for him is that he will spend the rest of the season being linked with vacancies at relgation-threatened sides. I for one, would not be upset if he ended up at Old Trafford one day, it could be Fergie’s last season after all. Add your thoughts to the thread below:

I cant agree with you more. He should be the next manager of Man United, he has the ability and vision to form a good squad without having to use huge budget. He’s also very good in bringing out the best in youth system. Unfortunately he has not been given the right backing in Villa, its their loss, not O’Neil. Since Fulham’s post is already filled by Mark Hughes, perhaps he should just take a holiday for the time being. Im sure someone is going to get sacked in December or January.

I would put Jose Mourinho way ahead on my preference list. He has that pull, which we seem to have lost these days. Players prefer to choose Real Madrid and Barcelona because of their history, money, climate. We can’t really match them for the last two, but after SAF leaves, we would need a strong personality for whom big name players would want to play at United. Mourinho fits that bill, O’Neill does not, no matter how nice a guy he is.
